“C’est une forêt de montagne préservée le long de la frontière thaï–lao, offrant des points de vue sur la mer de nuages depuis le sommet de la colline 1408 et rassemblant de magnifiques cascades toute l’année. Le parc est également un site historique du champ de bataille de Ban Rom Klao, avec des vestiges visibles sur les hauteurs.”

Phu Suan Sai National Park covers an area of approximately 73,225 rai (117 square kilometers), encompassing the high mountain ranges in the northern part of Loei Province, extending to the border with Laos, with the Hueang River serving as a natural boundary. The terrain consists of complex mountain ranges with elevations ranging from 600 to 1,408 meters above sea level, with the highest peak being Phu Suan Sai, also known as Hill 1408, which is a key viewpoint and a popular camping area for visitors.

The forest within the park mainly consists of tropical evergreen forests, moist hill forests, and mixed deciduous forests, remaining lush and fertile throughout the year. The park is the source of important rivers such as the Phrae River, Hueang River, and Lek River. During the rainy season, the forest becomes vibrant and filled with birdsong, while in the winter, the air is cool and fog often blankets the mountaintops, creating stunning "sea of clouds" views.

In terms of biodiversity, the park is home to a variety of wildlife, including gaur, wild boars, and more than 240 species of birds. Some species are endemic, such as the Silver-cheeked Woodpecker, Blue-naped Pitta, and Short-tailed Parrotbill, making the park one of the prime birdwatching destinations in northeastern Thailand. Reptiles include rare species such as the Himalayan Mountain Pit Viper, Banded Krait, and Big-headed Turtle. The park is also notable for the discovery of a new species of lichen, Pertusaria loeiensis, which is endemic to Loei Province.

The park features several outstanding natural attractions:

  • Hill 1408: The highest point in the park, offering panoramic views of sunrises, sunsets, and sea of clouds.

  • Hill 1255: A historical viewpoint with Phra Phuttharaksa and military bunkers from wartime.

  • Tad Hueng Waterfall: A large waterfall forming part of the Thai–Laos border.

  • Khing Waterfall: An easily accessible roadside waterfall, ideal for relaxation and swimming.

  • Wang Tat and Chang Tok Waterfalls: Medium-sized waterfalls along the Phrae River, maintaining a pristine natural environment.

  • Phu Hua Hom Viewpoint: A popular camping area for viewing the sea of clouds during winter.

Popular activities include trekking, nature study, birdwatching, camping, viewing the sea of clouds, and landscape photography. The park has well-maintained nature trails suitable for casual visitors as well as explorers who wish to camp in the forest.

The climate in Phu Suan Sai National Park is cool and comfortable throughout the year, with average temperatures ranging from 20–25°C. During winter, temperatures can drop to 5–10°C. The best time to visit is from July to February, when the scenery is at its most beautiful and the weather is pleasant.
